Scanning Options

You can customize the following options in the scanning dialog:

  1. Scanning mode

The choices here depend on the type of scanner used and the document to be scanned. Additional options may be available depending on the mode you have selected:

    • Flatbed

Select this option if you are using a flatbed scanner.

Tip: Scanning with a pause is convenient to reduce the time of scanning of a multi-page document. In this scenario, scanning of the next page starts automatically after a preset delay. Select "Scan multiple pages with pause" and enter the number of seconds in the field.

    • Document Feeder

Select this option if you are using a scanner with a document feeder.

  2. Color mode

The choices here depend on the colors of the document:

    • Black and white
    • Grayscale (optimal for recognition)
    • Color
  3. Resolution

This parameter determines the resolution of the scan:

    • 200 dpi

Scanning is fast, but it produces low-quality images. Select this value only if the source document contains nothing but text.

    • 300 dpi

The default value. Optimal for scanning typical documents with text and only a few pictures.

    • 600 dpi

Select this value to scan documents with printed in small fonts.

    • 1200 dpi

Scanning is slow, but it produces high-quality images. However, the file sizes will be very large.

  4. Scan Area

This parameter determines dimensions of the scanning area:

    • Current Selection
    • Entire Scanning Area
    • Paper Formats Supported by the Scanner

How to Choose the Correct Scanning Resolution

The recommended scanning resolution is 300 dpi.

Important! FineReader Sprint delivers best OCR results when vertical and horizontal resolutions are the same.

Setting very high resolution values (over 600 dpi) increases recognition times but does not substantially improve OCR quality. Setting very low resolution values (less than 200 dpi) may adversely affect OCR quality.

You may need to adjust the resolution of your images if:

To adjust the resolution:

  1. Click Scan.
  2. Select the required resolution in the scanning dialog.
  3. Scan the document.

Document Feeder and Duplex Scanning

If your scanner is equipped with an automatic document feeder, load the pages and select Document Feeder in the scanning dialog.

Select Use Duplex Scanning to scan facing book or magazine pages.

Select "Add blank pages to the document" to make subsequent processing of facing pages more convenient. FineReader Sprint will automatically insert a blank page after each facing page is scanned.
